African audiovisual production: in free fall?

African audiovisual production is regularly the subject of an alarming narrative: limited financing, significant piracy, and growing competition from international streaming platforms. The picture, however, deserves some nuance.

Real difficulties

Financing remains the main obstacle for many producers, who struggle to access budgets comparable to those of Western or Asian industries. Piracy, weak local distribution networks, and growing dependence on foreign platforms for distribution all weaken local producers' business models.

Signs of momentum

The picture is not uniformly negative: the Nigerian industry, often cited as a benchmark, continues to produce a significant volume of content, some African streaming platforms are growing, and new formats (podcasts, short-form content for social media) offer lower-cost production opportunities to reach new audiences.

It is within this mixed environment that Navalior Media operates, with the ambition of building a content production and distribution offer suited to the realities of the African market and its diaspora.
